December 27, Seoul--Hwang Soo Kyung and IU are the next celebrities to file serious charges against netizens posting malicious rumours about them.
Judge Ban Jung Mo from the Seoul Central District Court sentenced a blogger to 10 months imprisonment and 2 years of probation for charges of defamation. Eight other citizens were charged with high amount of fines for spreading rumours about athletes and celebrities through a mobile messaging service. The highest fine issued amounted to 5 million Korean won ($4,740USD)
Among the celebrities target by the convicted citizens were KBS announcer Hwang Soo Kyung and singer IU. Rumours about Hwang Soo Kyung tackled about her divorce while rumours about IU centred on her presumed marriage and pregnancy.
Judge Ban Jung Mo said, "The crime was done through blogs, mobile messengers and e-mail, and caused serious damages against those involved. Such crime cannot be taken lightly, but we have duly considered their admittance of their doings, motives, and also their repentance during the sentencing."
In recent related news, female celebrities caught under fire for false prostitution rumours have also taken legal actions to clear their name and issue necessary sentences for the netizens who stirred the controversy.
