On April 24, actor Kim Soo Hyun had given 300 million Won as a donation to Danwon High School, where many of the high school student victims of the Sewol Ferry tragedy had gome. Kim Soo Hyun had requested that the money be used to create a memorial for the deceased students and support family members, peers, teachers and friends of the victims as well.
A lot of netizens have commented positively to the actor’s good deed while some have taken to their Twitter accounts to say their disappointment with the actor’s large donation comparing to other celebrities' donations.
A netizen posted, “It’s great that you donated, but it looks like you’re trying too hard to stand out? Then did Ryu Hyun Jin donate only 100 million won because he didn’t have a lot of money? How tactless. Even if you have a lot of money, donating 100 million is the proper thing to do. Even when donating money, you should take note of what others are doing.”
A lot of netizens have came to the actor's defense saying, “Kim Soo Hyun donated with good intentions, why are you trying to make a big deal out of it,” “Looking at how critical you are, I realized how our nation can be so uncivilized,” “This person didn’t even donate, so why are they criticizing someone else’s donation? I really can’t understand. The act of donating is a good deed, so stop trying to tarnish someone’s reputation.”
In line with the news, other celebrities and public figures which includes figure skater Kim Yuna, major league baseball player Ryu Hyun Jin, actors Ha Ji Won, Song Seung Heon and Cha Seung Won have made donations to the amount of 100 million Won or so for the victims of the Sewol Ferry tragedy.
