Heechul Divulges SM Entertainment's Stand on Idols Composing Their Own Music

During the latest broadcast of "Ssul Jeon" Heechul revealed why SM artists aren't composing their own music like YG artists can.

Super Junior's Heechul made another striking comment on the November 7 episode of the JTBC's "Ssul Jeon" (War of Words). The singer shared SM Entertainment's opinion on song compositions being done by the idols themselves. He also discussed about SM's resident composer, Yoo Young Jin, who placed fourth in the list of producers with the most income from royalties in 2012.

Bluntly, Kim Gu Ra asked, "Why [doesn't SM Entertainment] raise their singers as composers, too?"

Heechul explained, "In Lee Soo Man's opinion, 'If you're not better than the expert composers, just accept the music and sing it.' He says the purpose is to leave it to the experts and have fun on stage."

While this may seem true and agreeable, Kim Gu Ra argued, "But wouldn't it be better if they motivated you if you did well like in YG? If even Kanging were to practice self-restraint and write songs, he could become a prominent singer-songwriter." The comment gave out a laugh from the other panel members.

"We likewise think it would be nice if we could do both, but we cannot get over the wall that is Yoo Young Jin and Kenzie," Heechul said.

Kim Gu Ra proceeded to asking about the quality of Yoo Young Jin's compositions and if the artists, or Heechul in this case, think that his songs have that "competitive edge" to become a hit.

Heechul, who's known to never hold back his opinion, said frankly, "There was a time I listened to the guide version and thought, 'What do I do?' Girls' Generation's 'The Boys' did well just because it was Girls' Generation. I even said once that I don't know what would happen if someone else sang that song."

Being the joker that he is, Kim Gu Ra inserted, "It wouldn't have done well if it were T.T.Ma."
